Missing on this spread is the Spanish poem by Garcilaso de la Vega
Toxic Love
This book is based on the relationship between organic and synthetic. It uses image and text to communicate the idea of heartbreak at the loss of the earth's organic characteristics that are replaced or taken over by synthetic materials over time. Eventually, all things organic are erased by synthetic representations.
This project came from an independent study course that involved designing a narrative piece. I used type as well as photographs to show the fall of organic to synthetic throughout this story. The beginning pages are filled with pieces of organic, handwritten notes from a journal. Not pictured here are poems handwritten directly onto the printed version of this project on pages four and five. As the synthetic takeover progresses, the type turns from block prints to computer generated fonts. The poems, quotes, and lyrics displayed express toxic relationships, heartbreak, loss, and damages that cannot be undone.
